The Woman In Black

A hauntingly beautiful cover for The Woman in Black, that captures Susan Hill’s gothic horror classic.

Overview

Commissioned by Penguin Random House, I designed the cover for Susan Hill’s gothic horror novel The Woman in Black. One of my best-known book covers, it captures the eerie atmosphere of the story with a Victorian-era aesthetic that evokes the novel's haunting themes.

Method

The design centred on Eel Marsh House shrouded in fog, a key scene in the novel. I drew the title lettering to rise between the reeds and roots, interwoven with intricate filigree enclosing subtle details that hint at the book’s spooky scenes.

Outcome

The final design was shortlisted in The Academy of British Cover Design awards and later redrawn in Italian for a European edition.

It’s a terrific cover
